# Key Termilogy Simplified

New to Easify Product Options? This page explains every term you'll see in the app, in plain language. Skim it once and the rest of our help center will make a lot more sense.

### 1. The Basics

#### Custom option

Any choice you add to a product beyond what Shopify gives you — a size dropdown, an engraving text box, a delivery date picker, a file upload.

Shopify limits you to 3 product options. Easify lets you add as many as you need.

#### Variant vs. custom option

A **variant** is one specific combination of Shopify's own product options — if a t-shirt comes in S/M/L and Black/White/Red, then *S / Black* is a variant.

A **custom option** is a choice added by Easify. It sits on the product page alongside your variants, but it isn't a Shopify variant, so it doesn't have its own inventory or SKU.

📝 **Note:** Use Shopify variants for things you stock and count. Use Easify custom options for everything you personalize or configure.

#### Option set

A collection of custom options you want to show on a product.

* Selling t-shirts? Your option set might hold size, color, print text, style, and fabric.
* Selling birthday cakes? Size, flavor, delivery date, and delivery time.

One option set can be applied to one product, many products, or your whole store.

#### Option set template

A ready-made option set — options, values, conditional logic, and settings already configured — built around a specific type of store.

Start from a template instead of a blank page and you'll skip most of the setup. No technical skills needed.

### 2. Building Blocks of an Option Set

#### Option type

The kind of input an option uses. Size might be **Buttons** or a **Dropdown**; special instructions might be a **Text area**; delivery date needs a **Date picker**.

Easify offers ***28 option types***, so there's a fit for almost any kind of choice.

#### Option label

The text your customers see above the option on your product page.

For a size option, the label is simply "Size". For something more specific, it could be "What do you use your glasses for?".

Labels are there to help customers understand the choice they're making.

#### Option name

The text that appears in the **cart, at checkout, and on the order** — plus how Easify tells your options apart internally.

Most of the time, the option name can match the option label.

📝 **Note:** Option names must be unique. Two options in the same option set can't share a name.

#### Option value

The individual choices inside an option.

For a Size option using Buttons, your values would be S, M, and L. Some option types (like a text box) don't need values at all — the customer types their own.

#### Option group

A special option that bundles related options together.

Selling engraved bracelets? Create an **Engraving** group holding front-side engraving, back-side engraving, engraving text, and engraving style. Your customers see one tidy section instead of four loose fields.

#### Option widget

The container that holds all your custom options on the storefront. It's what controls **where** your options appear on the product page — you can [reposition it using the app block](/easify-product-options/getting-started/app-activation/reposition-your-option-set-with-the-app-block.md) in theme.

### 3. Making Options Smarter

#### Conditional logic

Rules that show or hide options based on what the customer has already chosen.

* Selling phone cases? Show Apple models when the customer picks Apple, and Samsung models when they pick Samsung.
* Building a pizza? Pick "Vegetarian" and only vegetable toppings appear.

Customers only ever see choices that make sense for them, so they can't build a combination you can't fulfill.

#### Live preview / Product personalizer

With our **Live Preview** / **Product Personalizer**, shoppers can customize products – add text, upload images, choose colors, and more – and see their unique design instantly ***with live preview***. No more guessing games or hoping the final product matches what’s in their mind. Now, they’ll know exactly what they’re getting before they hit “Add to cart”.

### 4. Guiding Your Customers

These three are easy to mix up. They all add extra guidance, just in different places.

| Term | Where it appears | Best for |
| ------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Help text** | Below the option, always visible | Requirements customers must not miss, like character limits |
| **Placeholder** | Inside an empty input field, disappears as they type | Showing the expected format, like "Enter your name" |
| **Information (tooltip)** | Behind a small ? or i icon next to the label | Longer explanations most customers won't need |

#### Help text

A short line of guidance below the option. Use it for anything customers need to know before choosing — for engraved jewelry, that might be the maximum number of characters.

#### Placeholder

Sample text shown inside an input field before the customer types. For a custom text option on a tote bag, that could be "Your name".

It's a hint, not an answer — it clears the moment they start typing.

#### Information (tooltip)

A small **?** or **i** icon next to the option label. Hover or tap it and a small box appears with more detail.

Perfect for explanations that would clutter the page if shown all the time — the difference between canvas thicknesses, or the image requirements for a personalized book cover.
